    About our chasen

Our Matcha whisk, expertly crafted in Japan, is essential for an authentic matcha preparation experience!

Typically, when you brew tea as an infusion, many ingredients are lost. However, matcha tea, still prepared following traditional Japanese methods, involves mixing the powder directly into water. This process produces an intensely green tea with a distinct aroma. For a proper matcha experience, the traditional Matcha whisk, or Chasen, is indispensable. This elegant tool is made from bamboo and features 80 fine bristles, known as Chasen in its homeland.

    Meticulous Craftsmanship

Each Matcha whisk is a testament to unique craftsmanship, as they are still handmade in Japan. To maximize its effectiveness, it’s important to use the whisk correctly. Its numerous bristles optimally disperse the powder in the water, enhancing the tea’s intense and aromatic flavour.

Mastering the art of using the Chasen

Using the matcha whisk takes a bit of practice but is quickly mastered. Hold the whisk loosely, typically between the index and ring fingers, with the thumb providing additional support. Then, in a vertical zigzag motion, guide the whisk through the water. Imagine drawing a 'W' in the water. Repeat this movement until you see the characteristic matcha foam - airy and exceptionally creamy. This indicates that the matcha powder has been optimally mixed.

    Caring for your chasen

After your tea ceremony, clean the bamboo whisk by briefly rinsing it under lukewarm water to remove any remaining matcha. The whisk should never be placed in a dishwasher! After rinsing, rest the whisk on a Matcha whisk holder to maintain its shape and functionality.

Tip: To prevent the bristles from breaking during frequent use, briefly soak the whisk in hot tea water before using it. This allows the bamboo to absorb moisture, making the bristles more flexible.
